Types of Mailing Lists

Mailing lists may be characterized by two questions:

1) Who can send messages via the list to those who are signed up?
2) Who can sign up (subscribe) to receive messages?

Type of List

Description of Operation

One-way or Publisher's List

May or may not allow subscriptions

1) An individual creates a message and sends it to listname@sheperd.com

2) The mail hub receives the message and checks the email address against a list of authorized posters created by the system administrator.

3) If authorized, the mail hub re-sends the message to every address on the list.

4) All replies go to a person designated by the system administrator. 

Discussion Group


 

 

 

May or may not allow subscriptions

Moderated

1) Any member of the discussion group sends messages to listname@sheperd.com

2) The mail hub forwards the mail to the moderator.

3) The moderator reviews the message and decides whether or not to post it.

4) The moderator sends the message to listname@sheperd.com

5) The mail hub re-sends message to every address on the list.

6) All replies that are sent from an address on the list go to the moderator for review.

Unmoderated

1) Any member of the discussion group sends a message to listname@sheperd.com

2) The mail hub verifies that the message is from an address on the list.

3) If from an address on the list, the mail hub re-sends the message to every address on the list.

4) All replies that are sent from an address on the list are re-sent to the list.

Open

Allows Subscriptions

1) Anyone in the world sends a message to listname@sheperd.com

2) The mail hub re-sends the message to every address on the list.

3) All replies are re-sent to the list.

A password may be required for sending a message to any type of list, if desired. The system administrator can make this configuration change.
